Ongoing Update – Cochrane Report – March 7, 2017

The following was sent on behalf of Damian Lange, Director Clinical Operations, NRGH, and Dr. Ben Williams, Medical Director, Oceanside, to all Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, Oceanside Health Centre and Dufferin Place physicians and staff

Dear Colleagues,

As outlined previously, Island Health President and CEO Dr. Brendan Carr has asked that we provide you with regular updates.

1. Clarity Regarding CPOE Suspension:
Since our last update, we have sought clarification from the Island Health Executive on the direction given to the NRGH Local Quality and Operations Committee regarding CPOE.

  • What Direction has been Given Regarding CPOE
Based on the concerns raised by the Nanaimo Medical Staff Association (MSA) Executive, the Island Health Executive has asked that steps be taken to develop a plan to safely suspend CPOE and related processes. It is up to the NRGH Local Quality and Operations Committee to determine what related processes are affected.

  • Will Lab and Medical Imaging Investigations be Ordered on Paper?
CPOE includes all electronically based orders and electronic ordering of lab and diagnostic imaging will cease with suspension of CPOE.

  • Will the Hospital Go Completely Back to Paper Like it was Pre-March 2016?
While the direction is to suspend CPOE, other EHR functions will be affected. There is interdependency between CPOE and advanced-EHR functionality such as the Electronic Medical Administration Record (EMAR), Bar-coded Medication, Nursing and Allied Health Documentation, Provider Documentation (dragon dictation), Clinical Decision Support, Nursing and Allied Health Activities and Tasks. While it may be possible to preserve some advanced EHR functionality, CPOE acts as the “Hub” of the system and most other functions cannot be fully maintained without CPOE.
It will be up to the NRGH Local Quality and Operations Committee to determine which, if any, other areas of advanced EHR functionality should be maintained.

2. IHealth Survey
The NRGH Local Quality and Operations Committee is conducting a survey in order to understand staff and physician perspectives related to the direction to take steps to safely suspend CPOE. You should expect to receive a link to a secure and anonymous survey within the next 24 hours.

If you do not receive a link to the survey within 24 hours, please email webcommunications@viha.ca.

Survey results will be distributed to the NRGH Local Quality and Operations Committee and your feedback will help determine next steps.

Yours sincerely,

Damian Lange
